Running your own server is typically the most expensive option up front. You have to purchase all the equipment, maintain it and replace it as it ages; you have to contract a business broadband connection to the internet, you have to deal with backups, etc. On the other hand, having your own server gives you the maximum amount of flexibility and control, and if you are a heavy web user, it is the cheapest solution in the long term. Large corporations have all the required infrastructure already in place, and the marginal cost of running the web server is comparatively small.

On the other hand, you may want to have physical control of your server, especially if you have mission critical or confidential data stored in it.
